Unless you live in a cave, we are unable to escape the conversation after conversation about the healthcare crisis. I recently took a class with a wonderful speaker-Dr. James Chestnut, who is known in the chiropractic profession as a leading expert for evidence-based wellness care.

Dr. Chestnut shared some sobering statistics about the state of our healthcare system that has had me thinking since I left his class. For the first time in our society, more people are dying from overeating compared to starvation. He called our unhealthy lifestyle choices “suicide by lifestyle.” Sobering thought, isn’t it? That term bothered me all weekend-why? Perhaps there is some truth to this statement?

What he means by the term “suicide by lifestyle” is that we are literally making choices that have a profound impact on our overall health. For instance, what we eat has a direct effect on all of our body’s systems-including cardiovascular, endocrine musculoskeletal systems. If we don’t eat properly, we are taxing our systems far more than they were desiged to take.

The bottom line is that the healthcare system cannot truly be fixed unless there are less sick people in the system. There will only be less sick people when we elect to take control of our lives and make better choices. The key is is educating people to truly understand cause and effect-our behaviors today DO have a direct effect on our symptoms of tomorrow.

Did you know?

As of 2009, 45% of the American population has at least one chronic illness

2/3 of us are overweight or obese and less than 25% of us eat the correct amount of fruits and vegetables.

Diabetes was diagnosed 61% more between 1991-2001-which we all know has only continued to increase since that time.

91% of Diabetes is caused by an unhealthy lifestyle.

71% of all general practictioner visits result in a prescription.

So why do I share this information with you today? Because I want you to think about these statistics over the next few days. I want you to come to the same decision that I came to-it’s time to make some positive changes.

Here are 5 simple ways to SAVE your life:

1) Don’t smoke and/or regularly drink alcohol.

2) Get your BMI to normal limits (less than 24.9).

3) Add 30 minutes of exercise every day.

4) Eat an abundance of fruits and vegetables.

5) Reduce consumption of refined foods.

Just making changes to these lifestyles would considerably reduce obesity-the leading cause of chronic diseases.

We will be hosting a series of free wellness workshops to walk this path together. Let’s try to make an effort to get our lives on track through healthy lifestyles and behaviors. Let’s lead by example and make 2010 truly a year for positive change!

Love, health, happiness and prosperity for 2010,

Jen

You will have an opportunity to have a computerized foot analysis to see what your specific pattern is and watch a few attendees walk on a treadmill to better demonstrate the most common foot pattern-over pronation.
